When you first get the harness, put it loosely on your cat and let him get used to it.

When he is used to it, tighten it to how it should be, allowing room for movement, and let him get used to that.

You then attach a short lead to it and let him drag that around for a while.

When this is no longer a problem, pick up the lead and follow the cat wherever he chooses to walk.

For the first on lead walks outside, stick to your own yard where he knows where he is.

Slowly you can start to direct the cat on where you want to go.

This is not an over night process, it can take some time. Depending on your cat and how soon he accepts the various steps, and his personality it can be accomplished in a relatively quick time to weeks.
why would you want to train your cat to walk on a leash anyway? cats don't need to be walked. they walk in the house, and sleep..
I tried to do that once and it did not work >
Teatotaller sounds like they know what they are talking about. I'd like to add that the younger you start leash training a kitten the better chance you have of it working. Also, no matter what you do some kitties will never get use to it. I think it is a matter of temperment.
I will add patience and practice and repeat with lovingkindness and treats. Make it fun for Kitty - and yourself!
I have had many cats over the years and never have been able to leash train them. They are trained if you walk where they want to go!!
