Kittens meow when we're not in view - why don't they just come find us?

I have 2 kittens, and when we're out of sight, and they haven't seen where we went they meow like crazy. I know it's becuase they're missing us and asking us to come to them - but when we call out to say where we are, they still sit there and meow.
Why don't they follow the sound of our voice and find us (I know they can do it when they want to)? Are they just lazy, or are they trying to 'train' us and establish dominance?
It's frustrating cos in many other ways they're really smart.

Think about young animals in the wild. They are vulnerable to predators, even more so if a predator sees their movement. Really young animals must stay still to make themselves less vulnerable so when they need their mother (that's you now), they meow to let her know where they are instead of moving. Even house cats still have some of that feral instinct.
does your child come to you when it needs something?
Why do cats meow?

Cats have 4 different meanings for "meow". If you listen carefully, you can hear that each meow is different.

* I'm hungry!
* I want to go out!
* Help!
* I want attention!
And there is a ton of information about cats here also.http://www.breeders-choice.com/about/why.
can they walk?
I have one cat who still does this. She is three years old. I found her along
the road. She was way too little to be one her own. She was meowing the
most forlorn meow you ever heard. She still does it once in awhile if she
is alone in another part of the house. I think she is sad and lonely at that
point and needs me to find her. I do. She never comes to me I have to go
to her. Maybe your kittens are remembering a time when they were afraid
and alone. Please just go to them and comfort them. You will be a better
person for doing so. bless you.
animals call to each other to let them know that they are there and none of them is missing.

cats and dogs do this calling alot, if u know it or not

for an example ducks when they fly south for the winter, they call out to each other

this is the same thing for any animal

the reason why they are calling is to make sure no one is missing, and if there is some one missing, they will continue to call

that is what ur kittens are doing, they will continue to call for you until you are back in the group.

they look up to you as thier own mother, and they want thier mother to come and get them

this is called security, and reassurance
Kittens do that because they do not know where you are and they are afraid. If they try to find you, they are afraid that they will get hurt.
Kittens have been conditioned from birth that if they meow, mom will come to them to see what they need. We've fostered moms and newborn kittens before and whenever we picked one up to check it or to give it medicine, if it meowed, mom came right over.

They can carry this behavior into adulthood too. We have a pair of sisters for our barn cats and if one gets out of sight for too long the other will start calling for it. It's so interesting and gratifying to realize that you know you're cat so well as to be able to know what they are saying. Good for you to spend so much time with them.
