My cat allways brings in mice and birds. I want to stop him but don't know how. Any ideas. He is a 4 year old black male if any of this is of use.

You should be flattered that he thinks enough of you to bring you presents. If you don't want him catching mice and birds then leave him in the house. You cannot stop him from doing what thousands of years of evolution and instinct have taught him to do.
If you choose to get a collar with a bell as others have suggested, PLEASE make sure it is a breakaway collar so that if he gets caught on something he can get loose.
keep him inside where he will be safe and so will the wildlife.
Actually, I have been told that they bring their prey home to show you so you will be proud of them. If that is the case, showing slight dissatisfaction may resolve the issue.
The other option is to not let the cat out of the house.
You should not allow your cat to roam outside. He is actually bringing you, his owner, gifts in the form of the mice and birds he has snuffed out. If you must let him outside (again, not a good idea), place a collar with a bell around his neck (be sure it isn't too tight). This will alert birds and mice of his presence and he will be bringing home far less.
You can either keep him indoors (very hard on the cat if he is used to going outdoors) or put a collar with a bell on it on the cat. It is natural behaviour for a cat to hunt, all you can do is make it easier for his prey to hear him coming and have some time to get away. He is just doing his job getting rid of rodents.
