Knowledgable People Only Please - Feeding dry catfood with DL-Methionine?

Will feeding premium high-quality catfood that contains DL-Methionine prevent struvite crystals from reforming in cat's urine?

I will feed her wet food warmed up with water added as well, and have fresh water in glass bowl to drink. The Nutra Natural Choice food is healthier than the vet food, so shouldn't I just go with the good premium stuff instead since it contains DL-Methionine?

It has been known to help. Some cats have a problem no matter what you do.

Get Science Diet for cats.. you wont have to worry about what it has in it but you will find it at the vet and ask the veteranarian
I feed my cats ONLY Iams Dry cat food- and from all the other cats Ive seen out their their healthier and stronger. Her litter performance is same as any other. Ive had cats all my life and I highly recommend Iams dry food- as well as both my vets.
I just checked the Nutro site. There is no methionine in the dry food and it is in the canned food. Whether they put enough in to get your cat's pH corrected to be slightly acidic is the question. It's something you sort or have to play around with and do frequent checks on the pH of the urine. You can get testing strips from a pharmacy just like you used in high school chemistry lab. The strips should be colored lavendar or slightly pink to be on the acidic side. This does not mean you shouldn't have the vet check the urine too -- just that you can avoid many trips to the vet if you do some monitoring yourself.

So I would stick with the canned food and not use the dry. Dry isn't good for cats with urinary problems because the urine becomes too concentrated and may irritate the bladder.

Nutro dry foods does not meet the high standards of quality protein that I require of my cats' food anyway.

I had a cat with bladder problems (his urine would spike up to 9!). When he was switched to a home-prepared raw meat diet he had no further problems.
talk to your vet and see what they say, . I will only feed my cats Natural choice complete care indoor formula dry food, but my cats don't have a crystals in the urine problem either.
Struvite crystals form in cat's urine for more than one reason.

Science diet makes prescription diets to help address the reasons for struvite formation.

There are allot of opinions on what food is 'healthy', and each person has their preference.

If you do not wish to use a Hills/Science diet prescription food for urinary track care, ask your vet to order the Royal Canin line for cats with struvites- Royal Canin is about the best formulation that I know of that also provides medical management for struvites.

DL-Methionine is used as a urinary track acidifier, but when it's in food there is no way to determin the actual dose your cat is getting. It also is not nessisarily the 'best' acidifyer or treatment for struvites.

To prevent struvites you need a specific ph of the urine, and unlesyou can use the right ph test strips and the right urine collection (some owners do) you have no way to see if this diet is doing what it's supposed to for your particular cat.

I find in the long run it's less worries and less vet bills with a prescription diet :) it comes in several wet food sytles as well as dry
The goal is to try and find a food that is low acidic. That will reduce the amount or size of crystals (hopefully) in the urine. I would suggest Science Diet. They make a specific food for urinary health, as do several other brands. Don't put too much stock in what the advertising tells you. Of course the Nutro site is going to be loaded with lots of possitive info. They are trying to sell their product to you! I am not saying it is not a good food, but many of these foods are quite similar when you strip them down and look at nutrition. Some just come with heftier price tags! Get yourself a food specifically designed for urinary tract health.

Know of any air fresheners that work well for litter box room?

I'm looking for an air freshener (not the kind you plug in) to put in a closet where we keep 2 litter boxes. Has anyone tried any that work well that they would recommend?? Thank you!
Answers:
My best advice (since I know of no air fresheners that don't just make the room smell like poop and flowers mixed together) is clean the litter box every week, empty every day, use a litter deodorizer like Arm %26 Hammer or the Tidy Cats deodorizer, use a good quality litter with deodorizers in it. There are some air fresheners that are made of gels (I think it's made by Glade, but I'm not sure). They smell better than the cheap ones and they last longer. Citrus scents may cut through the litter box smell better than anything.
FABREEZE FOR PET ODORS
use more then one
yes its called, keep the litter boxes clean. Also one called.. open a window. or do not put in closets as the closets will hold odor.
A friend of mine just told me about the car air fresheners from Yankee Candle. She said they're really strong, so I'm considering getting one for the closet where our cat boxes are.

With sprays, I'd recommend Febreeze Air Effects or Oust. You know what works really well? Fabric refreshers. I used to use Febreeze, but found that the Clorox FreshCare smells absolutely great. I'd clean the cat box, which would stir up any odors..so when I was done, I'd spray the FreshCare into the air and on any fabrics (bed, curtains, etc.). Within seconds, you couldn't smell the cat box anymore.
shouldnt the stuff already have deodorant in the litter? if it smells that bad, go to the pet store and ask them, they should be able to help you.
It's probably best to use a small shallow pan (surface area) of baking soda which will absorb the odor instead of just mixing and masking with perfume. Another alternative would be a shallow pan of vinegar which also neutralizes odors. Good Luck!
Arm and Hammer litter works really well for odor control. use the multiple cat formula even if you only have one cat. it's great! Also you could try to get a covered litter box that has a charcoal filter, you can get them at Wal Mart for 10-15 dollars, that helps alot too.
I use Zero Odor which I ordered from a TV infomercial. You can call 1-800-526-2967 or go to ZeroOdorStore.com

If I get a bad odor I just spray it in the air near the box or if somebody has urinated in the shower.

I think the Febreeze would be less expensive (no shipping, handling fees) so I would try that first.
I have 4 cats and one big ol litter box. Ive found that Arm%26Hammer's litter box deoderizer is a GOD SEND. You sprinkle a little on after each cleaning, and im tellin ya, it eliminates all the smell. It even helps keep smell down between the cleanings, not just for a little bit ofter words. Its very cheap and it works wonders- at least give it a try LOL
air-wick - its a liquid just pull up the wick and it works - i have 2 cats and found that this stuff works well
Try this.Cat-B-Gone.

it REALLY works!
It seems that just about everyone recommended keeping the litter box cleaner. Well..I've found that using the Urine Gone spray works well. It helps cut down on the smell. But, the one person that recommended NOT putting the litter boxes in the closet is about the best suggestion I could make too.

Know how to set a Havaheart trap? I think I loused up the last question I asked!?

Trying to trap a sweet little black cat that has a wounded limb. Was told how to set it, but the answer "leaked" out of my brain, and I'm concerned about catching this little guy.
Answers:
Hi there.I hope this website PDF instructions can assist you with the set up process: http://www.havahart.com/cats/1099%20inst.

[edit] I hope this feral rescue website will also help: http://www.feralcat.com/trapinst.html#a1.
Why are YOU trying to catch it, call the humane society and have them get it.
a stray cat can have diseases that you may not want to expose yourself to.
Also, when the humane society catch it they will have a vet to examine it to fix the wounded limb and feed it and then find a decent home for it.
Don't let your sympathy for this cat get in the way of doing what is right for it. Unless you are a vet you will not know how to nurse it back to health

kitty's on the counter?

I have had such helpful answers to my other questions I thought I would give this a try.I asked my vet if cats understand the word no (being a dog owner and never a cat) he laughed at me and said no! But I think he's wrong!! If the 1 cat gets up on the kitchen table or counter, (which are the 2 things I won't put up with) If I say in a low deep voice.GET DOWN! he goes. The other cat you can stand there and yell and point to the floor GET DOWN and he will hide his head behind a bag or somehitng like you can't see him. HA! The other cat we kinda make fun of cuz he's so cute but so dumb! we say he is our "challenged" cat.lol! he stares at the wall or cieling at nothing for a long time. Just sits there. ha! god bless the lil guy! We say it's cause he's blonde (like me) ANYWAY.. what can I do to keep them off the counter and table? I tried plastic bags for the noise and they play inside them so that didn't work.I tried foil..nope! I heard to try double sided tape?
Answers:
OK, like you I have had cats understand NO! But my new one doesn't care much about the word no, so I put tape on any area that I do not allow her and she is learning where she is allowed and where she's not, so far she has been taped several times and doesn't like, so she stays clear of any area she has been taped. I just put upside down packing tape where ever I am trying to keep her away from, but stick it to your clothing first, it makes it less adhesive, so they don't get hurt when you remove it. I have never pulled hair out of my cat, it's just sticky enough to grab on and peel right off. Double sided tape works to, but I have found, once they have had tape stuck to them, they like that even less. My cat used to pee behind my couch, I put tape there and she got taped, I removed the tape a month later and she still will not go behind the couch.

Good luck.
squirt gun. it'll only take a couple shots, and he'll get the idea!

I too, have a 'challenged' cat that will sit and stare at nothing! We have to wave our hand in front of his face to get his attention sometimes. Cats!
I pretty much gave in to mine. He eats dinner on the counter and lies there for a little while because he likes being up high, and it is cooler. It started so he could eat without the dogs getting to his food. Trust me, I have never, ever allowed this in the past, but this kitty gets his way with me all the time, not because he is demanding.but because he's not!

Don't worry, I spray and wipe the counter all of the time.and he's a clean cat anyway.
Try a squirt gun! Other ideas are double backed sticky tape or foil on the table and counters. Good luck!
I wouldn't put anything that makes noise because they usually like that. You could try putting some black or Cayenne pepper on the counter so they smell it or the squirt bottle is a good idea if you have time to stand by the counter and wait for them to jump up there. You could also try something that will stick to their feet they don't like that. good luck
to keep cats off the cars outside, we used to put rubber snakes on the hood and trunk of the car, you could try that for the counter. It worked for the cars but of course our cats were inside/outside cats so they knew what a snake was. Don't know if it will work on an indoor cat.
Cats can learn tricks just like dogs. As for the counter thing, I'd get a squirt bottle, and when they jump up on the counters and tables, just squirt at them. (usually you don't actually have to squirt them litterally, just by them) If they dont move then squirt them. Eventually they will associate the counter with something bad and won't get up there any more. When youre not home leave the bottles on the counter and they probably wont stay up there for long.
Using a squirt gun and your verbal correction at the same time will get it done. It is interesting how different cats have different personalities. Sometimes you have to wonder just how smart some of them are.
Double-sided tape, scratchy welcome mats, X-mats, or anything that the cat will find uncomfortable should do the trick. If those don't work, you can get Ssscat, which is a can of citronella oil that will spray when set off by the cat's movements.

The problem with squirting the cat with water is she will learn (maybe) to not get on the counters when you are there but will still do it when you are away. The above methods work whether you are home or not.
get a squirt bottle. they can't stand it. I had a friend who used double sided tape, and the cats would get stuck and unhappy. After a few times, they decided that going on the counter would only hurt them, so they stopped.

With my kitten, I just kept taking her off the counter everytime she tried, and after a while, she gave up even bothering because she knew the instant she'd get up there someone would pick her up and toss her on a chair.
I have no problem like this with 2 of my cats. My third used to like the counter too and i put things at edges of counter to deter this and once she jumped up and knocked down a ceramic pitcher and it busted. The noise scared her so much she never attempted to jump again.

You can try using small brown paper lunch bags. when you catch the cat on the counter blow into the bag and then pop it after you say no and that should scare him down. after a few times he will associate the annoying noise with the counter and will not jump up on it.

You can also try a squirt bottle of water. Although this didnt work with my one cat. she just sat there and let me soak her. the bag trick worked though.
get a small mister type spray bottle, like they use in a beauty shop. the finer the mist the better. usually you don't even have to actually hit them with any water, just a spray in their direction. the fine mist helps not to soak or stain your furniture. it will only take a couple of times before they recognize the bottle!! Very humane and not traumatic for all involved, definiately beats yelling
i was gonna say try foil.but that didn't work for you.
double sided tape is a good idea too.
i would probably get a spray bottle or squirt gun and spray the cat anytime he got up on the counter.the trick with spray bottle training is to not let the cat see YOU spraying him.that will only train him to stay off the counter when you are around/looking..my vet told me the cat has to think the punishment has come from "god"..then he'll associate getting on the counter with getting sprayed, and not with you

Kittys is going Potty in my living room?

I have three cats and NEVER catch them doing it but one of them has been pooping ib my living room. I have had the carpets shampoo'd, used Natures Miracle among other random brands at the stores. The litter boxes are in the garage (I have 2) and I have seen all three of them use them, so they know where to go. Any suggestions?
Answers:
Our cats did the same thing.

Cats urine/poop in different areas of the house for many different reasons. Are the litter boxes clean? Some cats are picky about this. I'm not just talking about poop free. The very bottom of the litter box has a layer urine which needs to be changed at least every 2 weeks. The smell of urine will make you gag! Is there enough litter in it? I usually put 3-4 inches of litter in it so that they can not only fully cover it, but also get into that comfort zone of it.

Have you been gone more than recently? Cats will do this to gain your attention, just like kinds, bad attention is better than no attention.Have you brought someone new into your environment? Like a new friend or companion? Once again, lack of attention.

The last thing i can think of, the accessibility to the litter boxes. Keep one inside the house, like the bathroom. Introduce them to it one by one. Put them in there, even if it's just to play, they will get the idea then!

Also, when they urinate/poop where they are not suppossed too, it may sound mean, but either put their face near it and say no in a firm voice. If it is poop, show it to the cat, say no again in a firm voice, pick up your cat and put both the cat and the poop/urine paper towel in the box. Pat them on the head when done and talk to them in a calm voice and tell them how good they are.
try putting a litterbox in the living room. or throw them all out. weed out the culprit by letting only one cat in each day. at the end of the 3 days you will have found that naughty kitty!
You have to catch em in the act. one might be sick, or it was an accident the first time, and now the scent that is there, and even though you can't smell it, it is there, is a signal for any passing kitty to go there too
put a liter box in the living room and clean it every 1 hour
well every time you see them in the room, or near the area they do their business, just tazer them or throw somthing at them. that will scare them away from the spot and stop them from doing anything.
Please come to my house, I麓m expetise in it.
Ive got 3 cats
I think the one that does it wont get in her box because the other two assholes attack her when sh's squatting
keep alitter box in your living room or don't let them in
Most likely, they're marking their territory towards eachother. The best thing you can do is try your best to catch them, and use a spray bottle at them when you do. Unfortunately, it's a tough habit to break and you have to be patient. I worked at a vet and they had a cat brought back 3 times (by different owners) because it wouldn't stop going in the house. But patience is key, so if you want to keep the little dickens, try to train them as best you can. Hope this helps!
my new kitten would potty where he wasn't suppose to when i first got him so at night i would put him in the bathroom with the litter box. he soon got tired of that. I also bleached the area where he pottied, usually a cat will go back to the area they pottied because of the scent. You may have to get rid of the carpeting that was soiled if you can't bleach out the odor or scent.
Cats don't know it's wrong, especially when you can't catch them doing their misdeed. Try these idea's and see what happens. Good luck!

Kitty/Scratching?

I probably should have been more firm when bringing my kitty up, but I didn't really teach her not to scratch the sofa, or for that matter not to play with people's hands and stuff. Now she's about 6 months old. How do I train her retroactively? My previous roommate didn't care; my new one does.
Answers:
Hi there.your kitten at 6 months is still young enough to be retrained. First begin by having more than one scratching post next to areas she likes to scratch. Consider putting double-sided sticky tape on surfaces she scratches as a deterrent. Cats dislike the sensation of getting stuck to the tape. If you can catch her before she claws inappropriately pick her up nicely and move her to the scratching post and immediately offer her one kitty treat (something that is special and not her usual kibble). Consider keeping a small jar of the treats near each scratching post. The idea is to reward her for using the posts and not the furniture or any place unacceptable. Eventually in time she will learn to associate those posts are worth scratching as she gets paid with delicious treats for doing it ONLY there.

For biting, it's best to try and not encourage the behaviour in any way shape or form. Squirting with water or tapping the kitty in the face only increases the aggressive behaviour. Generally what is recommended is to cease all movement, move the cat away from the person being attacked and ignore them. Cats live for attention and when you do this it she will feel neglected and it's a humane way to punish the bad behaviour. When she calms down then offer her a pet and treat. The biting will decrease over time as it requires to be mindful on the humans part to break her of the habit.
it's not to late to teach her.
Try softclaws, these are little caps you put on your cats claws. You can purchase them in one of the larger petstores. Many people prefer these over declawing, it's more humane.
Give her a kitty scratcher with catnip on it.

Use a water spritzer on her everytime U see her scatching something else.

She'll learn..

good luck to U

Kitty with maggots?

I have a seemingly healthy kitty with no wounds. I noticed 3 maggot-like things in the area of his butt today. They were white, about the size of a grain of rice, and could sort of expand and contract themselves. I haven't noticed anything different in his diet or behavior - no excessive scratching, etc. He seems perfectly normal. He spends a lot of time outdoors, and I live in a semi-rural area. Could this be something he picked up outside, or does he have a worm/larvae issue?
Answers:
Those are just tapeworms and you just need wormer to get rid of them. My cats have had these too. My cats seemed normal too when they had worms. The ony reason I knew they had worms was how you found out, seeing them in the same area you saw them! These things are sooo gross, but are treated pretty easily. Good luck!
See if there is more in his poo. It sounds like worms. Parasitic worms don't move.
Sounds like a worm issue. Go buy a kitty dewormer from your local Wally world
No, these are worms, usually from swallowing a flea or two from when they groom themselves. Your vet or a feed store will have treatment for this. I know, it's icky, but it is normal and treatable.
He probably has worms. Take him to the vet as soon as possible.
I would have him checked by a vet. Sounds to me like he has worms. They have medicine for them and it is not very expensive.
Its worms..
worms! take to vet
well most likely pin worms. get a good dewormer and well time to clean the house. get some bleach and ammonia and go to town on the floors and anywhere the cat has been especially. not real bad but if you have kids it might be time to talk to them about worms or talk to your doc to see if there is anything you should be watching for.
yep, tape worms, they get it from eating critters outside
yes, those are called roundworms. you should submit a fresh fecal sample to your veterinarian so that it can be properly tested (usually takes about 10 minutes to run the test and costs about $10-$20 or something cheap like that). he will then give you some pills (drontal is what i believe they give adult cats with worms, it might be something different for kittens), which should get rid of the worms.
Not maggots but worms. Take him to the vet or d worm him yourself. I opt for the vet.
Those are intestinal worms, my cat had them too. Take it to the vet and they will give it a 1-time medication that will take care of it.
I just found a website where a lady has the same problem as you with her kitten. Sounds like the kitty needs to be dewormed. Take the kitty to the vet.

Those are tape worms. They break off in pieces and come out the butt sometimes. Caused by swallowing fleas.
You have to get Droncet from the VET. It is about 8 dollars a pill and you will give it one the first day and 10 days later you have to give it another one.
The liquid wormer stuff from the store is ONLY for roundworms, NOT tapeworms so don't waste your money on that, take it to the vet instead. Probably a good time to get it vaccinated and all that anyway.
These are egg baskets, from a tape worm. My little dog had them and I saw a pile of them. I took him to the Vet, and got 2 tablets, and he was fine. It is a cycle, that starts with fleas. Fleas eat the egg baskets which is really segments of the tape worm that breaks off and is passed out the butt, the animal eats the flea, then the cycle is repeated. I was horrified when I saw them, but they are not uncommon. I think now you may even be able to get tape worm meds over the counter at a pet shop. At the time my little dog had them, they could only be gotten from the vet. After you teat him , the tape worm will be dissolved, and passed. And then you will have one healthy kitty!
My cat had this 3 years ago, My mother didn't believe me till she seen it for her self. It from fleas, There are over the counter pills you can buy your cat, or some kind of liquid, it took care of the problem, if it doesn't you can just go to the vet and they will give you something that may work better, Its nothing to be stressed about. Good luck OK !!
That is worms and nothing to play with. In time they will kill the cat. Please take her to a vet ASAP from not knowing how long she has had them !!
The kitten has worms, he needs a dewormer!
definitely TAPEWORMS.they get them from ingesting fleas. You will need to take them to the vet for pills or injections. And get them a long term flea control like Advantage or Frontline or they could keep re-infecting themselves and you will have to deworm them over and over.
your kitty has worms take it to see the vet other wise it will get sick
they are indeed worms.TAPEworms, to be exact. Worm meds from Wallyworld will NOT cure them. But the vet does have pills that will do it. It's important that you get it done.
Get rid of the cat!..Another reason why cats suck!
observe the butt area carefully ensure there are no signs of internal infection to the area possibly from torn tissues you would observe, if not take him to the vet to be wormed it may just be time for worming, first thing on the schedule for tomorrow.
What you are seeing is tape worm segments. Small segments that look like grains of rice
You kitty needs to be wormed.
